Today marks the 150th anniversary of the opening of the historic Transcontinental Railroad, which transformed the American economy and culture!
Who built the Transcontinental Railroad? Immigrants. And specifically, Chinese immigrants—at their peak, 90 percent of the workers were Chinese immigrants. Overcoming harsh working conditions and discriminatory policies when they first arrived, 150 years later Chinese Americans continue to be a major force in the U.S. economy.
