The Greater Nashville Chinese Association held its 2019 Chinese New Year Gala on Saturday, February 9. The event was a tremendous and record-breaking success, with over 800 guests coming together for a lively and enjoyable evening in celebration of Chinese culture’s most important holiday.
We are grateful for the support of our sponsors; whose contributions made the Gala possible. In addition to a wide range of corporate sponsors, we were particularly thankful for the contributions from three local schools –Harpeth Hall, Montgomery Bell Academy, and Oak Hill School. Their support not only helps to provide educational resources to the increasing number of Chinese families settling down to raise their children in Nashville, but also connects the Chinese communities into the broader community of middle Tennessee. GNCA cherishes these partnerships and looks forward to fruitful relationships in the years to come!
We wish to thank the more than 100 performers who put on a fantastic show. Each year we are amazed at the talent from Nashville’s own community. MTSU’s Zhusong Du put on a virtuoso performance on the suona, a Chinese double-reeded instrument. The Little Eagle Chinese Dance Academy, some of the community’s youngest members, had the audience in stitches with their “Happy Little Pig” dance tribute to the Year of the Pig. And the portrayal of a Chinese family gathering together for the traditional holiday, set to the classic melody “Spring Festival”, left not a dry eye in the house.
Finally, thanks to all the individuals who helped put on the event; the dozens of GNCA volunteers who decorated the theater; the lighting and audio experts in Lipscomb’s Entertainment and Technical Services team; the chefs at Lipscomb’s Bison Café, who put together a feast worthy of the occasion; and to Kenneth Purdom, who chronicled the show in a stunning slideshow and photo gallery.
